Robert Rigg was the son of Henry and Jane Rigg, née Boynton. Henry was born at Baldersby and Jane at Thirkleby, Yorkshire.

Robert joined the West Riding Constabulary, 20 July 1908 (number 344). He was previously employed by the North Eastern Railway Company at Leeds as a Railway Policeman.
