BRITISH BATTALIONS ON THE SOMME, by Ray Westlake (Pen & Sword Books Limited 1994)

1/5th Bn. Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding Regiment)

Moved forward via Martinsart Wood to front line Thiepval (2/9). On left of 147th Brigade’s attack on Schwaben Redoubt (3/9) – Official History of The Great War records that some loss of direction occurred during advance – heavy losses at German wire – failed to capture Pope’s Nose. War Diary records assault as a failure ‘the men fought splendidly and in many cases without N. C. O’s or officers . . . As a proof of the hard fighting there were 350 casualties out of 450 who assaulted the German lines.’ Relieved and to Aveluy Wood.

[Albert Smales was killed in action on the 3 September 1916.]

IN MEMORIAM

SMALES – In loving remembrance of our dear son and brother, Private Albert Smales, who is officially reported killed on 3rd September 1916 (or since).

In a far and foreign graveyard,
Where the trees their branches wave,
Lies a loving son and brother
In his cold and silent grave.

Though he’s gone, he’s not forgotten,
‘Tis sweet to breathe his name;
In life we loved him dearly,
In death we do the same.

From the sorrowing Family.

LANGCLIFFE – PRIVATE SMALES KILLED

It was with a feeling of regret that the residents of the district heard that another of their lads had been reported killed. Mr. and Mrs. J. Smales, of Ribblebank, have received notification that their son, Pte. Albert Smales, was killed on 3rd September 1916 (or since). He was reported missing on that date. He enlisted in January 1916 in the Duke of Wellington’s West Riding Regiment. His parents have hoped against hope that news would come during nearly twelve months of suspense that he was a prisoner in Germany, but the fatal news has at last arrived that it is to be presumed that he was killed. Much sympathy is extended to the parents and family. Prior to the war Pte. Smales worked at the Craven Lime Works, Langcliffe, and was greatly respected by all who knew him.

30 August 1918

SMALES – In loving memory of Private Albert Smales, of Langcliffe, reported missing September 3rd, 1916, presumed killed twelve months later.

Days of sadness still come o’er us,
Hidden tears oft times flow;
But memory keeps our dear son near us
Although he died two years ago.

Ever remembered by all at home.
