HISTORY OF THE EAST LANCASHIRE REGIMENT IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 (Littlebury Bros. Ltd. 1936)

GALLIPOLI, 1915

1/5th Bn. East Lancashire Regiment

During November and December 1915, the 1/5th Battalion occupied trenches in the firing line on the north-west side of Gulley Ravine. On Christmas Eve the 1/5th were relieved by the West Kent Yeomanry.

[Clarence Cryer was killed on the 18th December 1915.]

EARBY SOLDIER’S DEATH IN THE DARDANELLES

A War Office intimation was received on Tuesday by Mrs. C. Cryer, Earlham Terrace, Earby, of the death of her husband, Lance Corporal Clarence Cryer, of the 1/5th Battalion East Lancashire Regiment, who was killed in action in Gallipoli on December 18th. Deceased, who was within a month of 30 years of age, was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Cryer, Stoney Bank, Earby, who have two other sons in the Army. Lance-Corporal Cryer was a Volunteer, and served eight or nine years in the Burnley Territorials. He enlisted soon after the outbreak of the war, and was sent to Egypt shortly afterwards, and had been in Gallipoli about eight months. He leaves a widow and one child.
