Arthur Hale was the son of Sutton Penman and Mary Hale, née Perks. Sutton was born at Newark, Nottinghamshire and Mary at Okeover, Derbyshire. Mary died in 1893 and Sutton married Catherine Swift in 1895.

The 1921 Census shows that Ada and her daughters were living at 1, Park Lane, Carleton, Skipton. Arthur and Ada's daughters Ivy and Eden were married on the same day – 10 February 1931, at St Mary’s Church, Carleton. Ivy married Robert Ransome Gill; Eden married Alan William Carruthers. Alan was the brother of T/2nd Lieutenant Gordon Carruthers (q.v.).

SKIPTON SOLDIER KILLED IN ACTION
News has been received that Corporal Arthur Hale of the Royal Berkshire Regiment, son of Mr. S. P. Hale, 25, Pendle Street, Skipton, has been killed in action while serving in France. The sad news came from the Regimental Depot at Warwick, and intimated that death took place on March 31st. A letter was enclosed expressing the sympathy of the King and Queen and Lord Kitchener with the relatives.
The fallen soldier was well known in the Skipton district. As a boy he was a member of the choir at Skipton Parish Church, and afterwards entered the service of the Duke of Westminster at Eaton Hall. Later, he was employed by Mr. J. W. Coulthurst of Gargrave. He left this district about five years ago, and leaves a wife and two children, who reside at Carleton.
Much sympathy is felt for the family, who are represented at the front by another son, Private Sutton Hale, of the 1/6th Battalion, Duke of Wellington’s West Riding Regiment. The latter was formerly employed by the Midland Railway Company, in the service of which the father spent many years.

A SKIPTON SOLDIER KILLED AT THE FRONT
Notification has been received that Corporal Arthur Hale of the Royal Berkshire Regiment, and son of Mr. S. P. Hale of 25, Pendle Street, Skipton, was killed in action on March 31st.
As a boy Corporal Hale was a chorister at the Skipton Parish Church for many years. Later he was in the service of the Duke of Westminster at Eaton Hall, Cheshire, and more recently he was employed by Mr. J.W. Coulthurst of Gargrave. He was 35 years of age and left Skipton about five years ago. He leaves a widow and two children, who reside at Carleton. Letters of sympathy from the King and Lord Kitchener have been received.
His younger brother, Sutton Hale, is a private in the 1st 6th West Riding Regiment, and he was formerly employed by the Midland Railway Company, in the service of which his father spent many years.
