HOLGATE – May 17th 1917, from wounds received in action in France, Gunner W. Holgate, R.F.A., eldest son of Mr. J. Holgate, Main Street, Addingham, aged 19 years.

ADDINGHAM SOLDIER DIES OF WOUNDS
We regret to announce the death of Gunner D. Holgate, who was seriously wounded and died on May 17th. Deceased joined up in April 1915 and went out to France in December 1916. He was 19 years of age and the eldest son of Mr. Joe Holgate, Main Street, who, besides the official intimation, received the following letter from C.O.R. Wormald, Chaplain to the Forces:–
“Dear Mr. Holgate, – You have probably been officially notified of the sad news concerning your son, D. Holgate, of the ----- Brigade, R.F.A. It may be of some comfort to you to hear from the chaplain who ministered to him while he lay seriously wounded in the 49th Casualty Clearing Station. He bore his sufferings with great fortitude, and his passing away was a peaceful one on May 17th. We buried him in a little cemetery nearby with full military honours. A cross will be erected to his memory, and his grave will be always well cared for. When I promised to write he asked me to give his love to all. May God comfort you.”

A SOLDIER’S DEATH
We regret to announce the death of Gunner D. Holgate, who was seriously wounded and died on May 17th. Deceased joined up in April 1915, and went out to France in December, 1916. He was the eldest son of Mr. Joe Holgate, Main Street, Addingham, and was 19 years of age.
