HELLIFIELD – Death of Pioneer Angus Ross

Mrs. A. Ross, who is residing with her parents at Boroughgate, Appleby, has received news of the death of her husband, Pioneer Angus Ross, R.E. A telegram stated that he died at Sagenhop, Dar-es-Salaam, East Africa, on October 19th from dysentery. Pioneer Ross, who was 32 years of age, was a railway telegraphist, and prior to joining the army had been employed by the Midland Railway Company for about 16 years. After serving at Carlisle and Appleby he was transferred to Hellifield seven years ago. He joined the Engineers in March last, and sailed for East Africa in August. From dates of letters written to Mrs. Ross during the voyage out, it is thought that he had only been in East Africa about three weeks. Previous to enlisting, Pioneer Ross resided at Thorndale Street, Hellifield. He leaves a widow and one daughter.
