James Hartley was the son of Jonathan and Mary Jane Hartley, née Veevers. Both of James's parents were born at Foulridge, Lancashire. James was the cousin of Private Harold Veevers (24512) (q.v.) and was distantly related to Private Thomas Albert Grindrod (52965) (q.v.).

FOULRIDGE – THREE SOLDIERS KILLED
Last week-end news reached the village of the deaths of two more soldiers – Privates Cocker and Hartley, and on Monday morning another death was announced, that of Pte. George Rodgers, of the Hole-in-the-Wall, Foulridge The first-named leaves behind him a widow and one child, but the others were unmarried. Pte. Hartley’s brother and father both died not very long ago from illness, and the family now consists of the widowed mother and one son, who is also in the army. Pte. Cocker was not, strictly speaking, a Foulridge man, but was married to a Foulridge girl, and for a short time before his enlistment lived in the village. The other two, however, were very well known, and were little more than lads. The three announcements coming so closely together have caused something of a sensation in the village.

FOULRIDGE
MEMORIAL SERVICE – On Sunday morning a memorial service was held at the Parish Church for three Foulridge young men who have lost their lives in the war, viz., Privates Cocker, Hartley, and Rodgers. A large congregation was present. A special address was delivered by the Vicar, and appropriate hymns were sung.
