LAWSON – Died of wounds, March 24th, Pte. Clifford Lawson, of the East Lancashire Regiment, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawson, of Downham Road, Chatburn, aged 21 years.

11 May 1917

CHATBURN SOLDIER KILLED

News has been received that another Chatburn lad has made the supreme sacrifice, the victim being Clifford Lawson, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawson, of Downham Road. The first intimation received by his parents was from one of his fellow soldiers who happened to be home on furlough quite recently. He stated that Lawson had been wounded the previous week in the thigh by gunshot, but thought the injuries were not serious. A telegram, however, was received last week announcing that he had died on the 24th ult. A bright and cheerful lad, he was about 21 years of age, and like his parents and relations, was keenly devoted to the Wesleyan cause. After his elder brother, Robert, joined the colours, Clifford could not be held back, but determined that he would do his duty. He joined up and was attached to the East Lancashire Regiment, and was shipped off to Egypt, where he met his brother and they were together through the Gallipoli fighting. They afterwards returned to Egypt, and subsequently were transferred to France. A memorial service took place at Chatburn Wesleyan Chapel on Sunday morning last.
