CONONLEY – Death of Sapper Fred Nixon
A telegram has been received from the War Office briefly stating that Sapper Fred Nixon has died in Egypt as the result of an accident. Further particulars are not yet available.

CONONLEY – SOLDIER’S DEATH IN EGYPT
As announced in last week’s ‘Craven Herald,’ a telegram has been received from the War Office by Miss Ida Nixon, Pear Tree Cottage, Cononley, to the effect that her brother, Sapper Fred Nixon, died in Egypt on the 5th inst. from the effects of an accident. Deceased was in the United States at the outbreak of the war and returned to England in 1917 and enlisted in the Duke of Wellington’s. After spending some months training at North Shields he was drafted to the Western Front, where he remained until the early part of last year, when he obtained his discharge. After a few months’ rest he again joined up, this time selecting the Royal Engineers, for a further period of twelve months. He was almost immediately drafted to Egypt. On the morning of the day on which the telegram announcing his death was received a letter dated June 28 had been received from him in Palestine, in which he stated that he was then engaged on a somewhat dangerous job, but that he expected to receive his discharge in about six weeks time. Deceased, who was 42 years of age, was a son of the late Mr. Joseph Nixon. He married Miss Ellen Brown, a daughter of Mr. Richard Brown, of Cononley, and resided in America. There is one daughter of the marriage. Deceased, who was of a very genial disposition, was for some years a member of the Cononley Parish Church choir prior to emigrating to America.
