Moved forward via Martinsart Wood to front line Thiepval (2/9). On the left of 147th Brigade’s attack on Schwaben Redoubt (3/9) – Official History of The Great War records that some loss of direction occurred during advance – heavy losses at German wire – failed to capture Pope’s Nose. War Diary records assault as a failure ‘the men fought splendidly and in many cases without N.C.O’s or officers . . . As a proof of the hard fighting there were 350 casualties out of 450 who assaulted the German lines.’

ADDINGHAM – MISSING SINCE SEPTEMBER 1917

A year and a half has passed without any news of Private Charles Hood, of the 1/5th Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, son of Mr. Isaac Hood of 4 Bolton Road, Addingham, who joined the Army February 16th 1915, and was reported missing September 3rd 1917, aged 22 years. In a letter from the National Council of Young Men’s Christian Association dated December 13th 1917, replying to one from his parents, it was stated that “notwithstanding the fact that diligent enquiries have been made at home and abroad, we fear that the soldiers who were missing from the West Ridings in July 1917 cannot have survived. This was, as you know, the first days of the Great Offensive on the Somme Front, and the battle was everywhere very violent. In the stress of the incessant fighting men had little opportunity for noticing the movements of their comrades, and we have reluctantly given up all hope of hearing anything of Pte. C. Hood’s fate, though the prisoners’ lists are closely watched for all the names of missing men.”

We assure Mr. and Mrs. Hood of our sincere sympathy in their trouble.
