Henry Laurence Slingsby (born 19 April 1893) was the son of William Cecil and Alizon Slingsby, née Ecroyd. William was born at Bell Busk, Yorkshire and Alizon at Nelson, Lancashire. Henry was a relative of Lieutenant Anthony Edward King Slingsby (q.v.); Captain Arthur Morris Slingsby (q.v.); 2nd Lieutenant Charles Slingsby (q.v.) and Lieutenant Stephen Henry Slingsby (q.v.).

1911 Cartmel, Lancashire Census: Henry Laurence Slingsby, aged 17 years, born Carleton. [Henry and his sister, Eleanor, were boarding with Willaim and Mary Alice Jackson.]

THE WAY OF THE PIONEERS

… August [1917] began with the usual hard work. Only two casualties had been suffered up to the 10th (one other rank ‘gassed’ and another wounded), but on that date the Battalion suffered a great misfortune. Shortly after midnight the neighbourhood of Mitry Camp was shelled heavily. At 1 a.m. (11th) the enemy’s shell-fire became more localized. At about 1.45 a.m. a large shell struck Battalion Headquarters Mess, killing Lieut.-Colonel E.A.B. Alston (the C.O.) and Major G.B. Stratton: the Adjutant – Lieut. H.L. Slingsby – was also seriously wounded and died later. One other rank was killed and 4 wounded…

SECOND-LIEUT. H. L. SLINGSBY WOUNDED

News was received last week end by Mr. W. Cecil Slingsby, of Whitbarrow Lodge, Grange-over-Sands (and formerly of Carleton-in-Craven), that their younger son, Second Lieut. H. L. Slingsby, of the Yorkshire Light Infantry, had been wounded in the head during the operations at the front, and is now in hospital at Boulogne, where he is making favourable progress.

LOCAL NEWS

Lieut. Henry Laurence Slingsby, M.C., K.O.Y.L.I., attached Duke of Cornwall’s L.I., is announced to have died of wounds on August 11th. Aged 24 years he was the younger son of Mr. and Mrs. William Cecil Slingsby, formerly of Beech Hill, Carleton, near Skipton, to whom sincere sympathy is offered on behalf of their friends in Craven.
