John Earnshaw Rider was the son of John Henry and Margaret Rider, née Earnshaw and brother of Private Francis Henry Rider (G/67587) (q.v.). Their father was born at Redmire and mother at Conisbrough, Yorkshire.

1901 Redmire, Yorkshire Census: Elm House Lodge - John E. Rider, aged 7 years, born Middleham, Yorkshire, son of John H. and Margaret Rider.

1911 Wray, Lancashire Census: John Earnshaw Rider, aged 19 years, born Ripon, Yorkshire. [John, a market gardener, was boarding with Miles and Eliza Mason.]
