John Henry Hooson was the son of Thomas Henry and Mary Jane Hooson, formerly or née Richardson. Thomas was born at Halifax, Yorkshire and Mary at New House, Westmorland.

1901 Newchurch-in-Pendle, Lancashire Census: Spen Brook - John H. Hoosin, aged 6 years, born Burnley, son of Thomas and Mary J. Hoosin.

1911 Skipton, Yorkshire Census: 21, Thornton Street - John Henry Hooson, aged 16 years, born Burnley, Lancashire, son of Thomas and Mary Jane Hooson.

FORMER BURNLEY MAN’S FATE

Pte. J.H. (Jack) Hooson, North Staffordshire Regt., son of Mr. and Mrs. Hooson, 54, Broughton-road, Skipton, formerly of Burnley, is now presumed to have been killed on Nov. 18th, 1916, after having been missing since that date. Twenty-two years of age, deceased was mobilised with the Skipton Territorials when war broke out, and after training was transferred to the North Staffordshire Regt., and served in Ireland during the rebellion. He went to France in Sept., 1916, and two months later was reported missing. In civil life Pte. Hooson was employed at Broughton-rd. shed, Skipton (where his father is the engineer), and was a member of the old Skipton Bulldog Scouts. He also played football with Niffany Rovers, in the position of goalkeeper. Mr. and Mrs. Hooson have two other sons serving – Pte. Tom Hooson with the Northants Regt. in France, and Pte. F. Hooson, who served with the Loyal North Lancs. Regt. in France from Sept., 1914, until recently, when he was wounded. The latter is now in a Glasgow hospital, and has had to have a leg amputated.

MISSING NEARLY 12 MONTHS NOW PRESUMED DEAD – PRIVATE JACK HOOSON, SKIPTON

We regret to hear that Private J. H. (Jack) Hooson, North Staffordshire Regiment, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hooson, 4, Broughton Road, Skipton, is now presumed by the War Office to have been killed on November 18th 1916, after having been reported as missing since that date. Twenty-two years of age, deceased was mobilised with the Skipton Territorials when war broke out, and after training at Ealing, Doncaster and other places, was transferred to the North Staffordshire Regiment, and served in Ireland during the rebellion. SKIPTON SOLDIER PRESUMED KILLED

Private J. H. Hooson (Jack), of the North Stafford Regiment, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hooson, of 54, Broughton Road, Skipton who has been reported as missing since November 18th, 1916, has now been presumed to have been killed on that date. Private Hooson, who was 22 years of age, went to France in September, 1916. He served through the Irish Rebellion, and mobilised with the Duke of Wellingtons West Riding Regiment when war broke out, and was in training at Ealing, Doncaster and other places. He was an old Skipton Bulldog Scout, and was formerly employed at Broughton Road Shed. He has another brother serving in France, Private Tom Hooson, who is attached to the Northants Regiment, while another brother, Private F. Hooson, has had a leg taken off in the Glasgow Hospital. The latter had served in France since September, 1914, with the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Private J. H. Hooson was formerly goalkeeper for the Niffany Rovers Football Club.
