Joseph Hoole was the son of Edward and Mary Ann Hoole, née Hodson. Both parents were born at Preston, Lancashire.

1891 Preston, Lancashire Census: 44, Bow Lane - Joseph Hoole, aged 2 months, born Preston, son of Edward and Mary Ann Hoole.

1901 Preston, Lancashire Census: 287, North Road - Joseph Hoole, aged 10 years, born Preston. [Joseph, his brother Frederick and their mother Mary A. Hoole, a widow, were living with her brother and sister-in-law, William and Mary E. Hodson.

1911 Preston, Lancashire Census: 280, Lancaster Road - Joseph Hoole, aged 20 years, born Preston, son of Mary Ann Hoole, widow.

BARNOLDSWICK – DIED OF WOUNDS

News has been received this week of the death in France of Pte. Joseph Hoole, King’s Own Lancaster Regiment, who succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds on the 23rd ult., having been hit in both legs, right arm and chest. Deceased, whose mother resides at Preston, was 25 years of age, and was formerly employed at the Barnsey Shed. He went out to France last May. During his stay in Barnoldswick he was connected with St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church.

News has been received this week of the death in France of Private Joseph Hoole, King’s Own Lancaster Regiment, who succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds on the 23rd ult., having been hit in both legs, right arm and chest. Deceased, whose mother resides at Preston, was 25 years of age, and was formerly employed by the Barnsey Manufacturing Co. Ltd., Barnsey Shed. He went out to France last May. During his stay in Barnoldswick he was connected with St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church.
