James was wounded whilst serving with the 9th (Service) Battalion Leicestershire Regiment; on returning to France he was posted to the 7th (Service) Battalion. He was killed in action near the village of Epehy, during the First Battles of the Somme, 1918, 21 March-5 April, at the Battle St. Quentin, 21-23 March. This was one of the battles during the German Offensives of 1918.
