James Thomas Hanson was the son of Thomas and Mary Hanson, née Peel. Thomas was born at Slaidburn and Mary at Newsholme, Yorkshire.

1901 Newsholme, Yorkshire Census: Slack Farm - James T. Hanson, aged 3 years, born Newsholme, son of Thomas and Mary Hanson.

1911 Clitheroe, Lancashire Census: 31, Pimlico Road - James Thomas Hanson, aged 13 years, born Newsholme, Yorkshire, son of Mary Proctor and stepson of Thomas Proctor. [Mary married Thomas Proctor in 1911.]

James was wounded whilst serving with the 9th (Service) Battalion Leicestershire Regiment; on returning to France he was posted to the 7th (Service) Battalion. He was killed in action near the village of Epehy, during the First Battles of the Somme, 1918, 21 March – 5 April, at the Battle St. Quentin, 21 – 23 March. This was one of the battles during the German Offensives of 1918.

‘Clitheroe Advertiser’ (29 June 1917)

Mrs. Proctor, The Willows, Worston, has been notified that her son, Private James Hanson, has reached Netley Hospital, suffering from shrapnel wounds in the right leg, received on the 14th inst. He is 19 years of age, and was first attached to the East Lancashires. Later, he was transferred to the 9th Batt. Leicester Regt., and went to France last Christmas. Before joining up, he was an assistant at one of the local Co-operative Society’s shops.

Private James Hanson, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Proctor, of Worston, is spending a short furlough prior to rejoining his regiment. He was hit with a shell fragment, as a result of which he was sent to Netley hospital, and has come on home from Poulton-le-Fylde.
