John Nixon was the son of Henry and Isabella Nixon, née Birtle. Henry was born at Linton Mill, near Grassington and Isabella at Skipton, Yorkshire.

1891 Embsay, Yorkshire Census: The Gill - John Nixon, aged 2 years, born Skipton, son of Henry and Isabella Nixon.

1901 Embsay, Yorkshire Census: Windy Bank - Johnn Nixon, aged 12 years, born Skipton, son of Isabella Nixon, widow.

1911 Skipton, Yorkshire Census: 48, Rowland Street - John Nixon, aged 22 years, born Skipton, son of Isabella Nixon, widow.

John died of wounds on H.M.H.S. 'Soudan' and was buried at sea.

John is commemorated on the Midland Railway War Memorial at Derby.

NIXON – August 26th, died of wounds received while serving with the Royal Engineers in the Dardanelles, Pte. John Nixon, formerly of Embsay.

ROYAL ENGINEER KILLED

Official intimation was received a few days’ ago to the effect that Private John Nixon, of the Royal Engineers, had on August 26th died of wounds received in the Dardanelles operations.

The unfortunate young fellow was only 27 years of age, and single. He had enlisted in January last, prior to which date he was in the employ of the Midland Railway Company as a fireman. He was a native of Embsay.

EMBSAY SOLDIER DIES OF WOUNDS

The photograph produced above is that of Private John Nixon, of the Royal Engineers, who is a native of Embsay and has died recently from wounds received in the Dardanelles. The deceased soldier, who was 27 years of age, enlisted early this year, and is the son of Mr. Henry Nixon, of Hull (formerly of Embsay). Prior to enlisting he was employed by the Midland Railway Company as a fireman.

SKIPTON SOLDIER DIES OF WOUNDS

Miss G. Nixon who resides in George Street, Skipton, has received information this week to the effect that her brother, Private John Nixon, of the Royal Engineers, had died on August 26th, on board a hospital ship from wounds received in action in the Dardanelles. Private Nixon left Skipton about two years ago for Carlisle, where he was employed on the railway. He enlisted in January of this year.

SKIPTON SOLDIERS WOUNDED

Mrs. T. Knight, of 55, Westmorland Street, Skipton, has been informed from the War Office that her husband, Sergt. T. Knight, of the Royal Frontiersmen Fusiliers, East Africa, was wounded on June 18th, in the right leg, and is now in the 1st African Stationary Hospital, Lindi, German East Africa. He is the third son of Mr. and Mrs. Knight, of Alma Terrace, Skipton, who have another son, Private G.M. Knight, serving in the Coldstream Guards in France.

Lance-Corporal A. Nixon, of the West Yorkshire Regiment, son of Mrs. H. Nixon, of 19, George Street, Skipton, has bean wounded in the head, face, arm and leg. He was admitted to hospital at Etaples on August 17th, and was afterwards removed to a hospital at Cambridge. He has written home stating that he is progressing as favourably as can be expected. Lance Corporal Nixon, who is 22 years of age, enlisted in August, 1915, and has three times been wounded. Five years ago he was employed by Mr. Geo. Carr, grocer, Skipton, and at the time of enlistment he was working at Hull. He has another brother, Private Thomas Nixon, who is serving with the East Yorkshire Regiment in France. His eldest brother, Sapper John Nixon, of the Royal Engineers, was killed in France two years ago.
