BURTON-IN-LONSDALE – KILLED IN ACTION

Mrs. Annie Harrison, Duke Street, has received information from the Chaplain that her elder son, Private John Harrison, attached Lancashire Fusiliers, was killed in action in France on September 28th, at the age of 18. Before joining the forces in November last, he was serving his apprenticeship as butcher at Kirkby Lonsdale. He was an ‘old boy’ of Thornton’s School and a bell ringer at All Saints’ Church. Keen in all kinds of sports, and well above the average, he was a member of the local cricket, football and billiard teams. The Chaplain states that Private Harrison was a good soldier and popular amongst his pals.

BURTON-IN-LONSDALE – Memorial Service

An impressive service was held at All Saints Church on Sunday afternoon in memory of Private John Harrison, Lancashire Fusiliers, and Private Stephen Lawson, Royal Scots, both of whom have been killed in France. The church was well filled, and the service was taken by the Vicar (Rev. R. Stowell), who made touching references to the two heroes, both old scholars of Thornton’s Schools. The former, aged only eighteen, was a bell ringer of the church and a most promising youth. The local members of the V.T.C. and special constables attended in a body. A collection for the local War Memorial Fund realised £2 17s. 3d.
