SILSDEN – TOLL OF WAR

News has been received by Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Wade, Skipton Road, Silsden, that their son, Private Albert Wade, West Riding Regiment (Lewis Machine Gun Section), was killed in action on September 21st. Private Wade, who was 30 years of age, enlisted in March, 1917, and went out to France in March last. He was formerly employed by Messrs. Berry and Fletcher, Airedale Shed, Silsden, as a warp dresser. He was also a member of the Conservative Club. Another brother, Gunner Percy Wade, is serving in Salonica. Mr. and Mrs. Wade received a letter from Colonel Arthur Driver, in which he writes:– “I am very sorry to inform you that Albert has been killed in action. He was killed instantaneously by a shell whilst on duty in the first line and was buried near to the place in which he was killed. I am having a cross made, which will be over his grave in due course. It has been a great blow to me, especially as I had known him all my life. During the short time he has been with us he has always proved himself a very cheerful and efficient soldier, and I can assure you such men are bad to replace now-a-days.”
