Alfred Edward Gunn was the son of Alfred and Jane Gunn, née Simpson. Alfred, senior, was born at Stratfod upon Avon, Warwickshire and Jane at Pilling, Lancashire.

1901 Scotforth, Lancashire Census: Bailrigg - Alfred Gunn, aged 8 years, born Fleetwood, Lancashire, son of Alfred and Jane Gunn.

1911 Bentham, Yorkshire Census: Seal Style Farm, Mewith - Alfred Gunn, aged 18 years, born Forton, Lancashire. [Alfred was employed by William Halstead Townley, Farmer.]

Lewis Gunner Alfred Gunn, Bentham

Gunner Alfred Gunn, of Bentham, was killed in action on the 8th June last, and the sad news reached his father, Mr. Alfred Gunn, of Balshaw, Tatham Fells, on Saturday last. The deceased soldier joined the ‘Duke’s’ about two years ago, and was in training about twelve weeks, after which he was transferred to the Lewis Gun Section and sent over to France, so that he has been about one year and eight months in France and Flanders. His only other brother is a Sergeant-Major in the Royal Scots. Both are wel1 known in the Bentham District, and much sympathy is expressed for the bereaved parents in their loss.

CRAVEN AND THE WAR – Lewis Gunner Alfred Gunn Killed

Gunner Alfred Gunn, son of Mr. Alfred Gunn, of Bolshaw, Tatham Fells, Bentham, was killed in action on June 8th. The deceased soldier joined up with the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment about two years ago, and was in training about 12 weeks, after which he was transferred to the Lewis Gun Section and sent over to France, so that he has been about one year and eight months in France and Flanders. His only brother is a sergeant major in the Royal Scots. Both are well known in the Bentham district, and much sympathy is expressed for the bereaved parents in their loss.
