WOODHOUSE – In loving memory of a dear son and brother, Lance Corporal A. Woodhouse, who died of wounds August 11th at 44, Casualty Clearing Station, France.

Fondly we loved him, he is dear to us still,
But in grief we must bend to God’s Holy will;
Our sorrow is great, our loss hard to bear,
But angels, dear lad, will guard you with care.
But the unknown grave is the bitterest blow,
None but an aching heart can know.

From Father, Sisters and Brothers, 9, Alder Hill Street, Earby.

EARBY WORKMATES DIE THE SAME DAY

The list of Earby casualties printed in this issue affords the striking coincidence of two workmates who worked ‘beam’ to each other, enlisted in the same regiment, became Lance Corporals, and died from wounds on the same day (August 11th), though in different hospitals.

Lance Corporal Alfred Woodhouse, Royal Berks. Regt., son of Mr. James Woodhouse, 9, Alder Hill Street, died from a shell wound in the back at the 44th Casualty Clearing Station, France. He was 26 and single. A well-known local football player, he joined Kitchener’s Army immediately after the outbreak of war and first saw service in the Dardanelles where he took part in the Sulva Bay landing. Last year he was invalided home from France suffering from gas poisoning. Before joining the Army he worked alongside Lance Corporal Yerkess, at Messrs. R. Nutter and Co.’s Albion Shed. His two brothers are both in the Army, one being in France and the other in training.

A loving son so good and kind,
A beautiful memory left behind;
So while he lies in peaceful sleep
His memory we shall for ever keep.
Oh! brother dear, ‘tis hard to part
With one so good and kind in heart;
When others return we will miss you most.

WOODHOUSE – In loving memory of our dear son and brother, Lance-Corporal Alfred Woodhouse, (6th Battalion Roya1 Berks. Regiment), who died of wounds received in action, August 11th, 1917.

He left his home in perfect health,
He looked so strong and brave.
We little thought how soon he’d be
Laid in a hero’s grave.
He gives us still the dear old smile
From the photo on the wall;
We feel as if our hearts would break
When fond memories we recall.

From the Family, 7 Alder Hill, Earby.

WOODHOUSE – In loving memory of our dear son and brother, LCpl. A. Woodhouse, 6th Battalion Royal Berks. Regt., who died of wounds, August 11th, 1917.

Forget him! No, we never shall;

As on the day he was called away.
