LIEUT. GOODALL OF CROSSHILLS KILLED IN ACTION

News has been received by Mr. and Mrs. J. Goodall, of ‘New Zealand’, Crosshills, that their nephew, Second Lieutenant Arthur C. Goodall, has been killed in action “somewhere in France” on the 6th November.

Second Lieutenant Goodall, who was in the Green Howards, was a member of the Durham Light Infantry (Territorials) when hostilities broke out. Shortly after the outbreak of war he was promoted to non-commissioned rank, and went out to the Front in April, 1915. Last December he received a well-earned commission, but in March of this year he was invalided home. Lieutenant Goodall comes off a Newcastle family, but was well known in the Crosshills district, where he resided for some time. In paying a great tribute to his memory, his Company Officer says:–

“Your son was one of the bravest men in France. I have over and over again seen shells burst quite near to him and he never troubled to turn his head. His platoon would follow him anywhere, and all his men worshipped him. This war makes most of us callous, but I feel the loss of him very much. He and Lieutenant Gregory took over their platoon on the night of the 5th November to attack a German trench. He was hit by a rifle bullet through the head, and never moved again. His devoted servant, Marmion, was with him and eventually brought back his watch. You could always be proud of your son when living, and now have a double right for pride in him.”

(Signed) H. L. BARTRUM, Captain.

THE LATE LIEUT. GOODALL OF CROSSHILLS

The deceased’s mother has received the following letter from his captain:– “You will be sure by now to have heard the sad news of your son’s great sacrifice. I write asking permission to offer you and yours my deepest sympathy. Your son was one of the bravest men in France. His effects will be sent home by regimental arrangements. You could always be proud of your son when living, and now have a double right for pride in him. If you want any further particulars please inform me. Always at your service, H. L. Bartrum, Capt., O.C., D Coy., 7 Yorks.”
