Arthur Holmes was the son of Christopher and Emma Holmes, née Bull. Christopher was born at Bentham, Yorkshire and Emma at Higham, Suffolk.

1891 Bentham, Yorkshire Census: Main Street - Arthur Holmes, aged 2 months, born Bentham, son of Christopher and Emma Holmes.

1901 Pendleton, Lancashire Census: 67, Laburnum Street - Arthur Holmes, aged 10 years, born Bentham, Yorkshire, son of Emma Holmes, widow.

1911 Pendleton, Lancashire Census: 17, Peacock Avenue, Barr Hill - Arthur Holmes, aged 20 years, born Bentham, Yorkshire, son of Emma Holmes, widow.

Arthur was married to Lenore Law in 1916. Lenore married Herbert Radcliffe Hall in 1923.
