A BEAMSLEY SOLDIER DIES FROM WOUNDS

Mrs. Newall, of Deerstones, Beamsley, has received the sad news that her son has died from wounds. The information was conveyed to her in a letter from the matron of No. 4 Casualty Clearing Station and gave the following particulars:– “Pte. Basil Gill Newall, Duke of Wellington’s, was very badly wounded in both legs, and although everything possible was done for him he passed away very peacefully at 5-35 in the afternoon of August 8th. He had only been admitted a few hours previously and never regained consciousness.”

Pte. Newall, who was only 19 years of age, joined up in September 1916, and went out to France in January 1917. Previous to joining up he assisted in the farm work at home.

NEWALL – In tenderest, unfading memory of our dear lad, Private Basil Gill Newall, 8th West Riding Regiment, killed in action at Ypres, August 8th, 1917, and laid to rest in Dozinghem Military Cemetery, aged 19 years.

We know that for us he laboured in the heat of battle’s turmoil,
Leaving his home and kindred, in the mud of the trenches to toil;
Braving the smoke and the thunder, to win at the end of the day
A little mound upon Flanders and a little cross in the clay;
A harvest of peace to be gathered in the field where his race was run;
This is the pay of the soldier – this and his Lord’s “Well Done.”

From his ever loving Mother and all at Deerstones, Bolton Abbey.

08 August 1919

NEWALL – In proud and loving memory of two dear sons, Private Basil Gill Newall, 8th West Riding Regiment, killed in action near Ypres, August 8th, 1917, laid to rest in Dozinghem Military Cemetery, aged 19 years; also Reginald Gill Newall (our dear little Rex), who entered the better life October 20th, 1918, aged 10 years. They each wore “The white flower of a blameless life.”

Beloved, it is well!
God’s ways are always right;
And perfect love is o’er them all,
Though far above our sight.

Beloved, it is well!
Though deep and sore the smart;
The hand that wounds knows how to bind
And heal the broken heart.

Beloved, it is well!
Though sorrow clouds my way;
‘Twill only make the joy more dear
That ushers in the day.

Beloved, it is well!
The path in faith that’s trod,
Though rough, and strait, and dark it be,
Leads home, to Heaven, to you, and God.

From Mother, Deerstones, Bolton Abbey.

22 October 1920

NEWALL – In tenderest, unfading memory of Reginald Gill Newall (our dear little Rex) who entered the better life, October 20th, 1918, aged 10 years. Also in proud and loving memory of Private Basil Gill Newall, 8th West Riding Regiment, who gave his life for England, August 8th, 1917, at Ypres, aged 19 years: and of many of his comrades with whom he was laid to rest in Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Proven, near Poperinghe.

“No nobler or more heroic death can a man die than to die fighting for his home, his country, and all that he holds most dear.”

They never quite leave us, although they have passed
Through the shadow of death, to the sunlight above.
A thousand sweet memories are holding them fast
To the home that they blessed with their presence and love.

From their ever loving Mother and All at Deerstones, Bolton Abbey.
