BUCKDEN – THE LATE PTE. BERNARD TENNANT

As already briefly reported in the ‘Herald,’ official information has been received that on September 9th there was killed in action in France Pte. Bernard Tennant, of the Manchester Regiment, younger son of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Tennant, of the Manor House, Buckden, and of Alexandra Road, Manchester, whose portrait is given above. He enlisted in November 1914, and was trained at Southport, Colchester and Crowboro’. He went out to France in July 1916, came back in March 1917, and finally returned to France in June 1917.

The following letter was written by his platoon sergeant on September 17th last:–

“Dear Friends, – Just a few lines of sympathy with the sad news, which, I guess, you will already have received. Your son gave his life for his King and Country, and I hope that God will repay you in some other form. He has gone from us, but he is not forgotten. He was well liked by all his comrades. I was only a few yards away from him when he was killed, and you can rest assured that he did not suffer, as he was instantly killed by a shell, and now lies in a soldier’s grave. By the look on his face he had made peace with his God. I write this letter on behalf of myself and my platoon, and we all hope that you will be given strength to overcome your sad trouble. Yours truly, E. TWIGG.”

A memorial service was held on Sunday last in Hubberholme church, the church of his ancestors for many generations back. The minister (the Rev. R. F. R. Anderton) in his sermon spoke of the resolute, brave, bright and cheerful bearing of Pte. Tennant, and of his great love for the works of God in nature, and he bore witness to his honourable, upright and high-principled life. He also pointed out that Mr. Tennant’s two sons were not the first of the Tennant family to tread the paths of military glory. They had followed the noble example of their great-uncle, Sergeant John Tennant, of the Grenadier Guards, who fought for his country in the Crimean War. The minister expressed an earnest hope that Mr. Tennant’s remaining son, serving with the Forces in Salonica, might, in the mercy of God, be brought safe home again.
