BOLTON-BY-BOWLAND – Death of Private Charles Geldard

On Saturday morning Mr. and Mrs. Geldard, of Cow House Hill Farm, received the sad news that their son, Private Charles Geldard, had died in France on the 23rd. Deceased had written to his parents on the 21st stating that so far he had not been in the firing line, so that he must have been wounded almost immediately afterwards. Private Charles Geldard, who was 20 years of age in March, joined the 6th West Riding Regiment on May 27th of this year, but was transferred to the Durham Light Infantry, and was sent to France on the 6th October last. The chaplain writes:– “I deeply regret to say that your son passed away on the 23rd. He was admitted into hospital the same day with a severe wound in the abdomen, and died without regaining consciousness. It will comfort you to know that everything possible was done for him. He was laid to rest in the Military Cemetery at Premount.
