EDMUNDSON – Killed in action, July 1st, Captain Charles Robert Ewbank Edmundson, York and Lancaster Regiment, of Nutwith House, Masham, aged 24 years.

25 August 1916

MASHAM SPORTSMAN KILLED

Captain Charles Robert Ewbank Edmundson, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. C. F. P. Edmundson, of Nutwith House, Masham, Yorkshire, who on July 21st was reported wounded, is now announced as killed on July 1st. He leaves a widow and one child. Enlisting in the public School Brigade in September 1914, he received a commission ten days later in the York and Lancaster Regiment, and became captain in July 1915, proceeding to the Front in the following month. His major, who has since been killed, wrote on July 22 last:– “He was a gallant soldier, and nothing I can say can express the admiration we all felt for him. He was in the attack on July 1 and gallantly led his men through a terrible fire, and even when all his men were shot down he continued the attack. He was wounded, I knew, but he would not be one to hesitate until it was beyond his power to go on.”

Captain Edmundson was a keen sportsman and good shot. He was 24 years old.
