Charles Ward was the son of Thomas and Mary Ellen Ward, née Chew. Thomas was born at Embsay and Mary at Skipton, Yorkshire. Thomas was the half-brother of Private James Ward (12842) (q.v.) and Private John Ward (235305) (q.v.).

1891 Skipton, Yorkshire Census: 18, Belgrave Street - Charles Ward, aged 6 years, born Skipton. [Charles was living with his grandmother, Mary Chew, widow.]

1901 Skipton, Yorkshire Census: 18, Belgrave Street - Charlie Ward, aged 16 years, born Skipton. [Charles and his widowed mother, Mary Ellen, were living with her brother, Richard Chew.]

Charles was married to Isabella Taylor in 1904.

WARD – October 17th, 1918, killed in action in France, Gunner Charles Ward, R.G.A., of 16 Westmorland Street, Skipton.

No one who knew him need ever be told
That a warmer heart death never made cold;
His loving smile, his cheerful face,
There’s none can fill my husbands place.

Skipton Gunner Killed

Gunner Charles Ward, R.G.A., who was killed in action on October 17th, was the secretary of the Hope of Craven Juvenile Tent of the Independent Order of Rechabites and a member of the Gargrave Road Primitive Methodist Chapel. He was in civil life a weaving overlooker for Messrs. Dixon, Skipton, and leaves a wife and child, whose home is at 16 Westmorland Street, Skipton. In a letter of sympathy to Mrs. Ward, Captain J. S. Lovell says that Private Ward was killed instantaneously at his post, and that the officers and men of the regiment are very sorry to lose so good a man. He also states that he buried deceased near the spot where he fell and marked the place by a cross. Private Ward, who was 34 years of age, enlisted on September 1st, 1917, and had been at the Front since Jan. 22nd this year.

Skipton Gunner Killed

Mrs. Ward, of 16, Westmorland Street, Skipton, has received a letter from Captain J.S. Lowell, stating that her husband, Gunner Charles Ward, of the R.G.A., was killed instantaneously at his post on Oct. 17th. He also adds that they all grieved very much at the loss of so good a man, that he was buried near the spot and a cross would be erected. Gunner Ward, who was 34 years of age, enlisted in September 1917, and went to France in January last. He was formerly employed as a weaving overlooker by Mr. Dixon, manufacturer, Skipton, and was secretary of the juvenile section for the Hope of Craven Rechabites. He attended the Gargrave Road Primitive Methodist Church.
