Edward Hartley was the son of John Moorhouse and Matilda Hartley, née Paley and brother of Rifleman Herbert Hartley (35201) (q.v.).

Edward Hartley's father was born at Threshfield, Yorkshire and was the son of Robert and Isabella Hartley. His mother Matilda was born at Height, Skirethorns near Threshfield, and was the daughter of Christopher and Mary Paley.

HARTLEY – June 7th 1917, killed in action in France, Pte. E. Hartley, son of Mrs. M. Hartley, of St. Albans, Christchurch, New Zealand, and grandson of the late Christopher Paley, The Heights, Skirethorns, aged 37 years.

Pte. E. Hartley (killed in action in France on June 7th 1917) was the son of Mrs. M. Hartley, of St. Albans, Christchurch, New Zealand. Private Edward Hartley was 37 years of age and grandson of the late Christopher Paley (the Heights, Skirethorns). Three more grandsons are serving – one at present in hospital with wounds received in France, July 31st, the others in France.

HARTLEY – In loving memory of Private Herbert Hartley, N.Z.R.B., who died from wounds at Bapaume, France, September 14th, 1918; also his brother, Edward, killed in action June 7th, 1917.
