Fred Wood was the son of Mary Slinger Wood. Mary was born at West Bradford, Yorkshire, the daughter of Richard and Isabella Wood, née Slinger.

1891 Wiswell, Lancashire Census: Wiswell Hall - Fred Wood, aged 1 year, born Wiswell, son of Mary Slinger Wood, single. [Fred and his mother were living with her brother William and grandmother Isabella Wood.]

1901 Blackburn, Lancashire Census: Bull's Head - Fred Fisher, aged 11 years, born Wiswell, Lancashire, son of Mary S. and [stepson of] Thomas Fisher. [Fred's mother, Mary, had married Thomas Fisher in 1898.]

1911 Liverpool, Lancashire Census: 15, Barlow Lane, Kirkdale - Fred Wood, aged 21 years, born Wiswell, Lancashire. [Fred was employed by Elizabeth and Margaret Wood, Cowkeepers. Elizabeth and Margaret were sisters who were born at Slaidburn, Yorkshire and may have been related to Fred.]

BURTON-IN-LONSDALE – Missing

Official information has been forwarded to Mr. James Dodgson that his son, Sapper William Dodgson, R.E., is reported as missing from March 26th, in France. Corpl Fred Wood, Manchester Regiment, son of Mrs. Thos. Fisher, High Street, is also missing in France since March 21st.

BURTON-IN-LONSDALE – Missing: Now reported Killed

Corporal Fred Wood, Manchester’s, son of Mrs. Thomas Fisher, High Street, previously posted as missing, is now reported on as follows by the Central Prisoners of War Committee:– “According to a German list he is reported to have died and was buried at Villeret on March 26th last. No further details were given. We fear there is no doubt that this man must have been killed in action and his body found and buried by the Germans.”

BURTON-IN-LONSDALE – Missing: Now Reported Dead

Cpl. Fred Wood, Manchester Regiment, son of Mrs. Thomas Fisher, High Street, who had been posted as missing since March 21st last, is now reported on by the War Office as follows:– “His death occurred at a place not stated between March 21st and 26th last and he was buried near Filleret.”
