George Fisher was the son of James and Mary Jane Fisher, née Busfield. James was born at North Grimston and Mary at Scruton, Yorkshire.

1881 Follifoot, Yorkshire Census: Follifoot Ridge - George Fisher, aged 2 years, born Follifoot, son of James and Mary J. Fisher.

1891 Follifoot, Yorkshire Census: The Ridge - George Fisher, aged 12 years, born Follifoot, son of James and Mary J. Fisher.

1901 Harrogate, Yorkshire Census: Gladstone Street - George Fisher, aged 22 years, born Follifoot, Yorkshire. [George was boarding with Sarah Hallam, widow.]

George was married to Emma Rathmell, née Wise, in 1909. Emma's only son, Ernest, by her husband, Benjamin Rathmell, was killed in action at Gallipoli whilst serving with the 9th (Service) Bn Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment) on the 22 August 1915 and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial.

1911 Pannal, Yorkshire Census: George Fisher, aged 33 years, born Follifoot Ridge, Yorkshire, husband of Emma Fisher.

The British Army Service Record for George Fisher exists but may be incomplete.

George and his stepson, Pte Ernest Rathmell (10290), are commemorated on the Pannal Parish War Memorial in St. Robert's Church.

FISHER – August 29th 1917, killed in action on the Western Front, Private George Fisher, Durham Light Infantry, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fisher, 19, Tufton Street, Silsden, aged 21 years.

SILSDEN – PRIVATE GEORGE FISHER KILLED IN ACTION

Official information has been received that Private George Fisher, of the Durham Light Infantry, husband of Mrs. Fisher, Sandylands, Pannal, Harrogate, and son of Mr. and Mrs. Fisher, 19, Tufton Street, Silsden, was killed in action on August 29th. In a letter to his wife, a chaplain to the Forces states:– “It is with great regret that I have to inform you that your husband was killed in action on August 29th. I buried him on August 31st in the cemetery at -----, and where his grave will be carefully preserved. Your husband was very popular with his officers and comrades, and they all desire to send you their sincere sympathy in your sad bereavement. Your husband was a good soldier and a real friend, and all here who knew him sorrow with you. I pray God to bless and comfort you and your family in your trial.”

Private Fisher enlisted in the Royal Engineers in June of last year, and was afterwards transferred to the Durham Light Infantry. He went out to France in December last where he worked with the Canadian Railway Troops. Mrs. Fisher lost her only son in the Dardanelles after he had been out there only a few months. He was 21 years of age, and enlisted in the West Yorks. Regiment at the beginning of the war.

Mr. and Mrs. Fisher, of Silsden, have two other sons serving – Private Charles Fisher, R.F.A., who is at present recovering from wounds received at Vimy Ridge, at a military hospital at Lessnes Park, and Q.S. Maurice Fisher, who is on a training ship attached to the Navy. Any news concerning Private George Fisher’s death will be gratefully accepted by his wife or parents.
