SKIPTON SOLDIER KILLED

Official information has been received from the Record Office that Corporal George Gelling, husband of Mrs. Gelling, of 17, Cumberland Street, Skipton, and son of Mrs. Charles Gelling, of Union Square, Skipton, was killed in action in France on January 25th. Corporal Gelling, enlisted in the West Riding Regiment (Duke of Wellington’s) in September, 1914, and went out to France some time in 1915. He had taken part in a good deal of heavy fighting, and only two or three months ago he was out on sentry duty when he was blown back into the trench by a shell, but escaped injury. He had fought against the Prussian Guard, who during the engagement had terrible losses inflicted upon them. He was a keen athlete, and formerly played rugby football with the Keighley, Worth Village, Manningham, and the Keighley Northern Union Clubs. He was 39 years of age, and was prior to the war employed at the Skipton Gas Works as a stoker.
