SKIPTON GUNNER SUCCUMBS TO WOUNDS – GUNNER G. P. TOWNSON

News was received on Friday of the death from wounds of Gunner George Parker Townson, of the R. F.A., son of Mr. and Mrs. John Townson, of 45, Castle Street, Skipton. Formerly manager for Messrs. Carr at their Pendle Street branch shop, deceased, who was 28 years of age, joined the Army in April last, and after the necessary training in Ireland and Woolwich was sent to the Front about three months ago. Shortly before enlisting he was married to Miss Cicely Lister, daughter of the late Mr. Thomas Lister, of Grassington, and granddaughter of the late Mr. John Brown, joiner and builder, of Skipton, with whom and the parents much sympathy will be felt. For many years he had been associated with the Skipton Congregational Church and was also a playing member of the Skipton Tuesday Association Football Club.

The sad new reached deceased’s wife at her home at 7, Gladstone Street, Skipton, in the following letter from the Rev. D. Tait Patterson, Army Chaplain:– “I am sending this note to you lest you should become anxious. I regret it contains such sad news for you. Your husband died here shortly after admission and was buried in the Military Cemetery at Varennes. I do not know the nature of his wounds nor how he received them; possibly you will find out from some of his friends in the Battery. I extend to you my sincere sympathy and trust that you may find strength and consolation in God in your hour of sorrow.”
