Sergeant George William Burrows, Skipton

Another local member of the West Riding Constabulary, making the fourth loss which the East Staincliffe Division has sustained, has paid the supreme sacrifice in the person of Sergeant George William Burrows, Duke of Wellington's (West Riding) Regiment. Thirty-two years of age and a native of Bradford, Sergeant Burrows, whose widow lives at 11 Milton Street, Skipton, had been in the Police Force for twelve years, nine of which he spent at Crosshills, Barnoldswick and Skipton. A pleasant and even-tempered fellow, he had gained the respect and esteem of his fellow officers and superiors, and was looked upon as a smart constable. He enlisted in June 1915, and had been on active service about two years. He was killed on April 11th.

The Late Sergeant Burrows, Skipton

With reference to the late Sergeant George Wm. Burrows, of Skipton, Mrs. Burrows has received a letter of sympathy from his Commanding Officer, who speaks of the gallant manner in which Sergeant Burrows met his death. "He called some men around him," he says, "and, jumping out of the trenches shouted, 'Come on, lads, follow me,' and they dashed across the open to help some men who had been surrounded by the enemy. Just as they reached their objective he was shot dead."
