CONONLEY – FIRST VOLUNTEER PAYS THE PRICE: RIFLEMAN HAROLD E. SHINGLER, K.R.R.

Rifleman Harold E. Shingler, who was the first Cononley youth to volunteer on the outbreak of war, has made the supreme sacrifice. The sad news has only just become generally know in the village. He enlisted in the 16th Battalion of the King’s Royal Rifle Corps in the early part of September 1914, and was drafted to France in October of the year following. His battalion was attached to the 33rd Division. He was killed at Valenciennes on October 12th 1918, and it is believed his body lay on the battlefield until October 26th, on which day it was interred between the villages of Montay and Neuville.

Deceased came to Cononley from Stoke-on-Trent about two years prior to the declaration of war, and was employed by the firm of Messrs. Horace Green and Co. as an electrical engineer. His mother died shortly after he joined up. He was a member of the Church Lads Brigade and of the choir of St.John’s Church. Of a very genial disposition, he was held in high esteem by his many friends, by whom his death is deeply regretted.

This makes the total toll of lives 15 out of 122 who joined the Forces from Cononley.

10 October 1919

SHINGLER – In proud and loving memory of Rifleman Harold E. Shingler, 16th Battalion King’s Royal Rifles, who was killed in action 12th October, 1918, in his 26th year.

“He laid his richest gift on the altar of sacrifice – his life.”

From Lillian and the Family, 41 Skipton Road.

CONONLEY – ROLL OF HONOUR

Two more Cononley residents have joined the colours – one is Mr. H. Shingler, an employee of Messrs. H. Green and Co., Ltd., electrical engineers, and the other Mr. Charles Stoddart, whose father formerly was landlord of the Bay Horse. The latter has since the outbreak of the war been stationed at Hull, keeping guard over German vessels detained in the Humber. Mr. Harold Shingler, referred to above, immediately after joining the King’s Royal Rifle Corps, C.L.B. Battalion, received the sad intelligence that his mother had died very suddenly. The sympathy of his many friends at Cononley goes out to him in his sad bereavement. Mr. Shingler is, by-the-bye, a sidesman at Cononley Church.
