Henry Wilson was the son of James and Eleanor Wilson, née Airey. Both parents were born at Howgill near Sedbergh, Yorkshire.

HOWGILL – DIED ON ACTIVE SERVICE

WILSON, Pte. Henry. News of the death on Oct. 10th, in the Persian Gulf, of Pte. Henry Wilson, of the Highland Light Infantry, was received on Monday. Pte. Wilson was the youngest son of the late Mr. James Wilson, The Whins, Howgill. He was formerly a member of the church choir. On leaving Howgill a few years ago he joined the police force at Seaforth. From there he enlisted in the Border Regiment, but was transferred to the Highland L.I. and went to the Persian Gulf a few months ago. The official intimation says “the nature of the disease not stated.” Pte. Wilson was 27.

MEMORIAL SERVICES – COWGILL [HOWGILL]

On Sunday afternoon a memorial service was held in the Parish Church for men from Howgill who have fallen in the war: Pte. James Mason, Pte. Miles Capstick, Pte. Henry Wilson, and Sec.-Lieut. Oswald Whaley, son of the late vicar of Howgill. There was a large congregation. The service consisted of part of the ordinary evening service, part of the burial service, special prayers and sermon, which the vicar ended by saying that “whilst we all sympathise with those who have lost their dear ones, we are all proud of our heroes.” At the close of the service the organist played the Dead March.
