SKIPTON SOLDIER KILLED

A Former Railway Porter

News has just been received in Skipton of the death of Lance-Corporal Herbert C. Springthorpe, of the 2nd Lincolns, and who was formerly a porter at the Skipton Railway Station. He was well known in the town, and much sympathy will be felt for his young widow.

It is two years since they left Skipton to try their fortunes in Canada, and they settled down in Vancouver, where the widow is at present residing.

On the outbreak of war Springthorpe, who was a reservist, was called to join his old regiment, the 1st Lincolns. On his arrival in England, however, they had already left for the front, so he was drafted into the 2nd regiment. They left for the front during November, and as part of the 25th Brigade they shared in the battle of Neuve Chapelle. It was on March 12th that Springthorpe was killed, and his name was published in the casualty lists a day or two ago.

Writing to a Skipton comrade just before he said, “I hear Kitchener’s Army wants to get out. Well, let them all come; there is plenty for them to do here. Any one might think, to read some letters which have been published, that the Germans are asleep. I can assure you they are not; they are as wide awake as we are.”

Springthorpe was a native of Whitwell, in Rutlandshire.
