Herbert Hartley was the son of John Moorhouse and Matilda Hartley, née Paley and brother of Private Edward Hartley (32448) (q.v.).

Herbert Hartley's father was born at Threshfield, Yorkshire and was the son of Robert and Isabella Hartley. His mother Matilda was born at Height, Skirethorns near Threshfield, and was the daughter of Christopher and Mary Paley.

HARTLEY – September 14th, at the 56th Casualty Clearing Station, France, died from wounds received in action on the 12th, Private Herbert Hartley, N.Z.R.B., aged 34 years, youngest son of John Moorhouse and Matilda Hartley, St. Albans, Christchurch, N.Z. Deeply regretted.

HARTLEY – In loving memory of Private Herbert Hartley, N.Z.R.B., who died from wounds at Bapaume, France, September 14th, 1918; also his brother, Edward, killed in action June 7th, 1917.
