BURTON-IN-LONSDALE – DIED FROM WOUNDS

Private Hugh Strickland, Royal Warwickshire Regiment, who was severely wounded in the head on July 21st, succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, July 30th, the sad news being conveyed to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Strickland, High Street, Burton-in-Lonsdale, in a letter from the chaplain at the General Hospital in France. Pte. Strickland was one of the first Burtonians who, soon after war broke out, volunteered for active service and joined the Kings Own Lancaster Regiment, but was afterwards transferred to the Royal Warwicks, and is the first soldier from Burton to make the great sacrifice in this war.

On Sunday afternoon an impressive memorial service was held at All Saints’ Church amid signs of general sympathy with Private Strickland’s parents. Muffled peals were rung on the bells and the Union Jack hung at half-mast on the village green. The church was filled with sympathisers, including many of his fellow workmen from the Ingleton branch of the L. and N.W. Railway, among whom the deceased soldier was held in high regard. The Vicar (Rev. R. Stowell) gave an inspiring and touching address, and the burial service was read, terminating with the playing of the Dead March in ‘Saul’.

A collection was taken at the service in aid of a permanent memorial for Burton soldiers.
