James Bell Fawcett was the son of Robert and Ann Fawcett, née Bell. Robert was born at Thoralby and Ann in Swaledale, Yorkshire.

1881 Thoralby, Yorkshire Census: Littleburn - James Bell, aged 1 year, born Thoralby, nephew of Thomas Fawcett. [Also living there was Robert, the unmarried brother of Thomas and father of James. Robert, who was joint partner in the farm, married Ann Bell later that year.]
