RIMINGTON SOLDIER KILLED

News has been received by Mr. and Mrs. Braithwaite, Howgill, Rimington, that their son, James (aged 26) has fallen in battle. About five years ago he emigrated to Australia. He met with success and had arranged to be married. But the raising of troops to assist the Motherland changed his plans and in July, last year, his parents received a letter from him intimating his intention to enlist. He joined the 18th Battalion Australian Imperial Force, and saw service in France. His parents were informed that something untoward had occurred some days ago, and Mr. Malkinson, pastor of the Martin Top Congregational Chapel, wrote the Officer Commanding for information. The following reply was received: "I deeply regret to have to inform you that Private Braithwaite was killed in action on the 15th August last while serving with the British Expeditionary Force in France."
