WITH THE CANADIAN CONTINGENT – FORMER SKIPTON MAN KILLED

It is feared that a former Skiptonian has lost his life with the Canadian contingent in France, in the person of Pte. J. Duckworth. Mr. Duckworth was formerly employed at the factory of Messrs. Rose, Hewitt and Co., Broughton Road, Skipton, and lived in Midland Street, and subsequently at Carleton. For a period he was at Keighley and eventually emigrated to Canada with his parents. Several letters have been received from him by friends in Skipton. One of these was recently returned bearing across one corner the words, ‘Next of kin notified,’ and in the other ‘Deceased.’ Where or how he came by his death is not known.

Seventy young men belonging to the church and school are at present serving with the Colours, of whom two, H. Maudsley (deacon and Sunday School superintendent) and H. Birch have been missing since May 3rd and August 17th respectively, while the following have given their lives in the great cause:– S. Bishop, J. McIntyre, J. Duckworth, G.A. Wilson, H. Greenwood, D. AN OLD SKIPTONIAN PROBABLY KILLED

Mrs. Roberts of 21 Midland Street, Skipton, recently sent a letter to Private J. Duckworth of the 3rd Company, 5th Battalion, Canadian Contingent, who was at the Front, but she has had it returned to her and on the envelope are printed the words “Next of kin notified”. In the left hand corner an officer has written “Deceased” and again across the enveloped the same word is written.

In early boyhood Private Duckworth resided at Otley, but later came to Skipton and stayed in the district for many years, during which time he worked at Messrs. Hewitt’s mill and became well known. From Skipton he removed to Keighley, and subsequently went with his parents to Canada.
