James Pratt was the son of John and Agnes Pratt, née Kirkbride. Both parents were born at Gayle, Yorkshire.

1911 Hawes, Yorkshire Census: Bands Farm - James Pratt, aged 12 years, born Hawes, Yorkshire, son of John and Agnes Pratt. [Gayle was the birth place given for all the family, but this was crossed out and replaced with Hawes.]

James was killed in an action in which the Battalion padre, the Rev. Theodore Bayley Hardy, VC, DSO, MC. (q.v.), received the first of his four recommendations for the Victoria Cross.
