CRACOE NAVAL MAN SUCCUMBS TO PNEUMONIA

The widespread sympathy with Mr. and Mrs. Fred Swales of Threapland, in the death of their only son ‘Jim’, was shown in the very big attendance at the funeral at Rylstone Church last Sunday. James Swales attained his 18th birthday on July 29th 1917, and on being called up elected to join the Navy. He was stationed at Portsmouth, and had only been in training about 5 weeks when he caught a chill which developed into double pneumonia, and he died on Wednesday July 3rd. Fortunately his parents were able to get to him on Monday night, July 1st, just before he lost consciousness, which he never regained. Surely he died for his country equally with those who were killed in battle.

04 July 1919

SWALES – In loving memory of our dear nephew and cousin, Seaman Jim Swales, who died July 3rd, 1918, aged 18 years.

“Thy will be done.”

Uncle, Aunt and Cousins, Rylstone.
