John Burton was the son of Richard and Agnes Eleanor Burton, née Chapman and brother of Rifleman George William Burton (45481) (q.v.). Their father was born at Dent and mother at Howgill near Sedbergh, Yorkshire.

1901 Sedbergh, Yorkshire Census: Back Lane - John Burton, aged 8 years, born Sedbergh, son of Richard and Agnes Eleanor Burton.

1911 Merton, Surrey Census: 31, Carlton Park Avenue, Raynes Park, Surrey - John Burton, aged 18 years, born Sedbergh, Yorkshire. [John, a shop assistant, was living with his sister-in-law Florence Burton. His brother, George, was absent when the census was taken.]

SEDBERGH - KILLED IN ACTION

BURTON, Pte. John. Mr. R. Burton, of New Street, Sedbergh, has been informed that his son, Pte. John Burton, has been killed. Pte. Burton, who was 25 years of age, joined the South Lancashires. He was reported missing on the 5th of February last year. It is only a few weeks ago since Mr. Burton was informed of the death in action of another son.
