John George Capstick is my grandfather. He never saw his son but was always a person we were told about as children. His picture hung above the dining table it always seemed huge to us as little ones. He was seated in uniform holding a silver capped cane.
In the early nineties I went to India to find his grave and went to Poona and was very moved by the whole experience. The cemetery was beautifully kept and a credit to their commission.

In reply to Eleanor Mary Pallant nee Capstick.

        Hello
        My name is Alan Bateman.
John George (and of course his brother Harry) is my second cousin, once removed.
Our common ancestor is James Hoggarth Capstick from Birkhaw (farm), Howgill. JHC is my maternal Great Grandfather.
        John George’s grandfather – Thomas – was JHC’s half-brother.
John George’s parents – John and Sarah nee Scott – had enough grief to bear. Apart from losing John George and Harry, their son Thomas Scott Capstick (1878-1900) died at 22. And, of course, their nephew Miles had died of wounds in 1916.
I’m not sure whether this site shows you my email, but I’m happy to record it below anyway.
If you wish, I’d be pleased to share Capstick heritage …

        with best wishes
        Alan
