AUSTWICK - SECOND LIEUTENANT J. G. CAMPBELL REPORTED KILLED

Official news is to hand of the death in action of Second Lieutenant J. G. Campbell, elder son of Mr. T. Campbell, Town Head, who has been reported in our columns as missing on May 8th last. The sad news came in the form of a 1etter from Sergeant Archer, saying that Second Lieutenant Campbell was giving orders to him early on the morning of May 9th when he was hit in the head and killed instantly. Sergeant Archer was afterwards taken prisoner and had not the opportunity of notifying the parents sooner. He says he feels the loss of his officer keenly, for he was a gallant and brave soldier. Second Lieutenant Campbell enlisted in May 1915, and was drafted out to Egypt in December of the same year in the Cyclist Section. He was transferred to France in March 1916, and remained there until July 1917, when he came to England to train for a commission. He only returned to France in April last, being killed a few weeks later. Prior to enlisting he was employed as clerk on the Midland Railway, and had just passed examinations qualifying as a stationmaster.
