John Heaney (or Haney) was the son of John and Mary Haney, née Judge and brother of Corporal Joseph Haney (14051) (q.v.). Their father was born at Grassington and mother at Keighley, Yorkshire. Mary Haney died in 1889.

John was married to Alice Cresswell in 1916.
