DIXON – Killed in action in France on April 21st, Pte. John J. Dixon, aged 19 years, York and Lancaster Regiment, younger son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Dixon, Butts Hill, Horton-in-Ribblesdale.

HORTON-IN-RIBBLESDALE – PRIVATE JOHN J. DIXON KILLED

The parents of Private John James Dixon have received notification that their son was reported to have been killed in action in France on the 21st ult. Prior to joining the Army, the deceased, who was of a very bright and cheerful disposition, and who was born in January, 1898, had been engaged in agriculture, and after three months’ training in the Sunderland district with the York and Lancaster Regiment, was sent in a draft to France, where, despite his youth, he had seen much fighting. His letters home were very optimistic; never complaining, but alas looking forward to his homecoming. Mr. and Mrs. Dixon have received expressions of sympathy from many persons to whom they tender sincere thanks. The deceased’s brother is with the Expeditionary Force in France.

We little thought when he left home
That he would never return.
Somewhere in France in a soldier’s grave
Lies our dear one amongst the brave.

Butts Hill, Horton-in-Ribblesdale.

As there dawns another year,
And in our lonely hours of thinking
Bring his memory very near.
