WOUNDED AND MISSING

Private John Scott, Worcestershire Regiment, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Scott, 15 Devonshire Terrace, Skipton, is reported as missing since April 10th, an official intimation to this effect having been received by his wife, who now lives with her parent in Broughton Road, Skipton. Prior to enlistment about a year ago, Private Scott was manager of Messrs. Freeman, Hardy and Willis’s Burnley Branch.

UNKNOWN FATE OF A SKIPTON SOLDIER – PTE. JOHN SCOTT, 10th WORCESTERS

The accompanying photograph is that of Private John Scott, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Scott, 15 Devonshire Terrace, Skipton, who was reported missing after April 10th 1918, and of whom nothing has since been heard. Thirty-three years of age, Private Scott entered the service of Messrs. Freeman, Hardy and Willis, boot manufacturers, as a youth, and after serving several years in their Skipton shop he acted as relieving manager at various places for a considerable time, afterwards being permanently stationed its Manager at the Burnley shop.

He first went out to France in July 1917 and took part in some heavy fighting with the 10th Worcestershire Regiment. He was home on leave in March 1918, and soon after his return to the Front he wrote saying that he had lost his equipment and had narrowly escaped being taken prisoner. Nothing has since been heard of him, and it is feared that he has paid the great price. Enquiries have been instituted through all the well known channels, but without result. Last week a letter was received from the War Office saying that there was no trace of him as a prisoner of war, and in view of the lapse of time it was thought that it was hardly possible that he would be still alive. Private Scott’s wife lives at 70 Broughton Road, Skipton, and she will gladly welcome any information which may throw a light on her husband’s fate.
